When observing the multitude of swimbaits available in tackle stores today, it is easy to be blinded by the overabundance of boot and paddle tail style soft baits. Undoubtedly, these styles of swimbaits are subtle and proven fish catchers, which should make them staples in anyone’s bass fishing arsenal. However, Castaic has revolutionized the soft swimbait game by introducing its series of Platinum Soft Swimbaits. Castaic, “the original swimbait company”, has always been at the forefront of swim bait design and development and the Platinum Series proves to be no exception. In this short article, I will highlight some of the key innovations behind the Platinum Series Soft Swimbaits and showcase how these baits can be utilized to give the angler a definitive edge in tournament and recreational fishing.

First of all, the Castaic Platinum Series Soft Swimbait is a double jointed swimbait with extreme realism. At all retrieve speeds, this bait kicks and swims just like the real thing! This unparalleled attribute allows for this bait to be retrieved excruciatingly slow eliciting strikes from neutral or negative lunker bass. Additionally, the ultra-soft plastic from which these baits are made ensures that when a fish strikes this bait, it won’t let go.

Secondly, this Castaic Platinum Series Soft Swimbait has a unique hook apparatus affixed to the under-belly of the bait. A modified treble hook with all three barbs facing outward is anchored by a small magnet embedded in the soft plastic. When a fish strikes this bait, the treble hook comes free from the anchorage magnet guaranteeing a solid hook up.

There are some apparent downsides to this bait that need to be mentioned. The ultra-soft nature of the plastic makes it vulnerable to breakage, particularly at the joints. Soft bait glue is a must have when fishing this bait due to the fact that the bait can be destroyed after only one fish! Also, even though the treble hook design is unique, the hook itself lacks quality and must be aggressively sharpened with a file prior to fishing.

Overall, the benefits of this bait in catching fish far outweigh the negative elements. With it variety of sizes, fall rates and prey fish designs, this bait is an easy addition to anyone’s fishing arsenal with big results! In the future, I look forward to fishing and reviewing the Castaic Catch-22 which is touted to be made of more resilient plastic with the same great action.
