Megabass: XPOD

I’m a huge fan of Megabass, but when I first heard about the Megabass Xpod, I thought to myself “gimmick.” After fishing the Xpod, the words that come to mind are revolutionary and versatile.
The revolutionary design of the Xpod was inspired by the Transformer toy craze and created by the famous Yuki Ito at Megabass. The Xpod has been designed with a moveable lip that will adjust to seven different positions. By adjusting the lip to each of its positions, the action of the bait will transform from a walking bait, to a popper, to a subsurface bait with a few steps in between. I was very pleased to see how solidly the lip would snap into each position.
Below are the different lip positions and their corresponding action/command as described by Megabass:
- Command 1 : Pencil Bait (roll walker mode) – upper most lip position
- Command 2 : Pencil Popper
- Command 3 : Active Popper
- Command 4,5 : Diving Popper / Splash Mode
- Command 6 : Darting Swimbait Mode
- Command 7 : More Active Swimbait – lowest lip position
What does this transformable bait mean to you and me on the water – VERSATILITY. I like to think of every bait I own as a tool. Some tools work better in certain situations where others do not. Well, the Xpod is basically the Swiss Army knife of my tackle box. The Xpod provides anglers with the choice of seven different tools from one cast to the next without tying a different bait on or picking up another rod. So if you’re fishing a shoreline flat with a walking bait and see an isolated piece of cover, you may wish you had a popper to target that isolated cover. With the Xpod, you can simply adjust the lip in seconds between casts to the desired popper mode. This also works great when fish are chasing your bait, but they are not committing. The angler can quickly change the action of the Xpod to something else that may trigger the fish to strike again.
The Xpod is a slightly larger bait than most other topwaters with its 4¼” length and 3/4oz weight. I found this to be a good thing for covering water, and I caught fish of all different sizes, 10 inches on up. I would like to see Megabass come out with a smaller version of this bait aimed toward smallmouth. I believe buoyancy may be an issue in a smaller bait that could perform all of the same commands, but I would gladly settle for a 3½” bait that could transform from a walking bait to a popper.
So here is what I really think about this $30 bait. The Xpod is a lot of fun to fish, and I would not hesitate to fish it in a tournament situation which I anticipate will happen in the very near future. I actually caught fish in every mode since I began fishing it about a month ago, but I tend to use it as a popper and pencil bait/pencil popper more than the other modes. That may change as the water cools down. In October, I’m looking forward to testing the versatility of the Xpod on my favorite river when the smallies are on their annual fall topwater terror. I really think it will slay some smallies and allow me the ability to adjust to the changing moods of the fish.
In closing, I believe the Xpod will spark a new genre of baits from Megabass and maybe even for the fishing industry. This bait is not a gimmick, and it does catch fish…sometimes even two at a time. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself. You will not be disappointed.

The XPOD is a fun bait to fish. It’s very versatile and is almost like a game trying to catch fish on all lip positions. You should have seen Greg go from 6 to Midnight when he landed that double. Love it.
Great footage! That looks like an awesome bait. It would be great if they made it in a Jr. size. You could hear his voice go up an octave or two when he realized he had the double. Gotta get me a couple of those!
This looks like a good bait to save some time on the water. The time saved by not having to retie or pick up another rod when a fish strikes and you want to show them something a bit different could amount to quite a few more casts and that amounts to more fish. I will be getting my hands on a few of these baits.
